Sumptuous theatre in the evening, the Arena is the symbol of the city's Roman tradition.
The Verona amphitheatre is situated in piazza Brà, where the Tourists and Verona are seeing at Cafés around the Monument.
During the Roman era in the amphitheatre were the sought after fights between gladiators and those of men against ferocious beasts.
The Amphitheatre was built outside the original city of the Republican era. The Arena of Verona must have already been completed by about 30. a.D.
This Monument is formed of four concentric rings, the outermost today retaining only the four archways of the wing (Ala).
The second ring followed, which today is seen as the exterior of the Arena. Inside, the actual space of Amphitheatre is a modern arrangement, the result of restoration work carried out between 1569 and 1680, under the Venetian Republic.
Although the emperor Constantine forbade, in 325, gladiatorial performances, at once the Roman complex return to more entertaining function, and it was given over to bull-baiting and plays, and to an ever-widening panorama of the performing arts including, after 1856, opera, which has become the caracteristic of the Arena in our own times.
