The Forum Boarium of Medieval Verona later became Piazza Bra, also known as Braida which may be traced etymologically to the German breit, wide.
The piazza is bounded by the Arena the line of palazzos on the Liston, the 17th-century building of the Gran Guardia, and the Neoclassical town hall, Sanmicheli and his school also contributed much to be the definition of the form of the square, the former with his Palazzo degli Honorii, later Guastaverza and now Palazzo Malfatti, which was begun in 1555.
The building is characterized by the lower arcade of five robust arches, which seem to echo the arcades of nearby Amphitheatre. The school of Sanmicheli, whose protagonist here was Domenico Curtoni, drew on this architecture for the plan of the Gran Guardia, the large building forming the south side of the Piazza. Partially completed between 1609 an 1614, it was finished in 1821 when the missing part of the upper order was added.
